  • Wiring question...

I'm trying to hook up a bilge pump on my 96 SPX, and can't seem to find a wire that has
12V when the engine is running, and is dead when the engine is off. Anybody have an
idea? I've pierced enough wires and checked with my multimeter until I'm ready to give up!

Find the purple wire that goes to the guages. It only gets hot when you push the starter button or attach the tether.

Thanks Bill - that's exactly the one I needed. It works perfectly!

        Similar question for 97.5 GSXL.

I'm fitting a rule automatic pump and need a live feed as above. If I tap into the live for the gauges will the extra amps harm the mpem?

Looking at wiring diagram I'm guessing purple wire to gauges.

If it's an automatic pump, why not hook it to the positive post on the battery?

Using a test light, you can find a hot lead when the tether is on by pricking the wires until you find one that only gets hot when you push the start button. Always install the inline fuse.

Thanks Bill, Found a 'switched' supply to the VTS (tested the wires in a connector).

Couldn't connect it to the live post of the battery as it checks for water every 2 mins or so and would just kill the battery in no time in storage.
